Melissa Winston is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the states of Missouri, Kansas, and Ohio and is the founder and co-owner of 510 Counseling Group. With a Bachelor's Degree in education and many years of work with teens and families in the non-profit sector, Melissa found herself feeling compelled to help more but not having the tools to do so. Motivated to impact more lasting change, she went back to school to get her degree as a Marriage & Family Therapist from Capella University and has been working in various treatment settings since 2011. She has a combined total of 28 years of experience working with teens and families. Melissa specializes in work with adolescents, parents, couples, and families. Using a mix of systemic and trauma therapy modalities, Melissa works to meet clients where they are to help them find their own solutions to the problems they are facing. Therapy should be a safe space to process and be honest about whatever your'e thinking and feeling without judgement. Once we feel heard and seen, then we have the courage to go towards the healing we long for in our lives. Melissa believes that all people have the capacity to change, and that as we each work toward our own individual wholeness, we can then have deeper, more meaningful relationships. There is hope for even the most broken and painful parts of our stories - if the individuals are willing to do the work on themselves. Melissa is a big believer in functional care to address the root issues of mental health difficulties - from developmental and neurological disconnection, trauma, nervous system dysregulation, and unidentified health issues that cause mental health imbalance - and partners with several area providers to help clients find solutions that often traditional pathways have failed to help them find. Melissa is extremely passionate about people and will work as hard as you will to help you get where you want to go. Melissa loves working with many populations, but has specific passions around working to support parents with struggling kiddos, high impact leaders, fellow healing professionals, couples facing challenges - including unraveling generational trauma, infidelity, blended family dynamics, co-parenting and more. Melissa also offers MFT graduate and post-graduate supervision in the states of Kansas and Missouri and is an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. Outside of therapy, Melissa loves to decorate, to hang out with her husband and two sons (and their doggos), and to spend time with her community. She is also passionate about organizational leadership and community development. Melissa calls Grain Valley home and is thrilled to pour into the people of this community so that individuals and families can be healthier and stronger. Melissa is on the board of the Grain Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Blue Springs Rotary Club and enjoys serving in those capacities. Melissa also serves on the Advisory Board of the University of Central Missouri MFT Program and was appointed to the Missouri State MFT Board of Directors by the Governor in 2023, where she continues to serve. She is passionate about growing the MFT field in Missouri and beyond and serves as the co-chair of AAMFT’s Missouri Family Team. Melissa is not currently accepting new clients or clinical interns, but you can call the office and ask to be added to her wait list.
